They Don’t Have a Clue

Here is Jeb Bush about the economy and workers:

“Workforce participation has to rise from its all-time modern lows,” Bush said. This means, he said, “that people need to work longer hours and through their productivity gain more income for their families”.

It’s the Very Serious Person sydrome again.  Our problem is we are lazy and we don’t work enought so workers need to put their noses to the grindstone. Bush equivocated later when asked about his comment:

“You can take it out of context all you want, but high-sustained growth means people work 40 hours rather than 30 hours and that by our success they have disposable income for their families to decide how they want to spend it rather than standing in line and being dependent upon government.”

Okay genius lets just cover a few facts.  First, the more productive workforce in the world is in the United States. Second, most of the productivity gains in the last 15 years, which has been significant, did not result in increased wages.  Third, there are a ton of people working part time because they can’t get full time good paying jobs.  Finally Americans work longer than most workers in other countries:

“According to an August Gallup poll, 42 percent of U.S. workers 18 and older work 40 hours a week — the standard for full-time employment, while 50 percent work longer than that. The average time Americans spend working is 47 hours — nearly a full extra workday, Gallup noted.”

So blaming workers, another part of that 47% thing, is just stupid.  But that is the world and echo chamber he travels  in.  And he is going to fix our economy?  Well things will be good for the 1%.
