The Internet Sucks and It’s Going to Get Suckier and Other Sucky Things

Have you noted that connecting on the internet this weekend sucks.  Everyone is shopping, but that is no excuse.  If you are in constant traffic on the highway, it is the same phenomenon, we have failed to keep up and invest in tomorrow, and now it is tomorrow.  Now I have the suckiest internet on the planet, satellite, which they over sell and most days it slows down to a crawl.  But this week I was in San Diego working off my hotel’s wifi and it sucked too.  Is that what we are now, second class citizens in a third-rate country?

Then there are the pop-up ads.  You are in the middle of something and suddenly your screen is taken over by some ad.  Now, I get this on free sites that have to make a living.  But I don’t get it on my subscriptions, like the NYT, the WaPo, or the Guardian.  Am I not already paying for this service? So get your shit off my screen. Oh, and in the middle of important work, whatever utility you are using decides to upgrade?  Fuck them, do it at 3 am in the morning.  Oh, and those little updates eat up my already paltry satellite bandwidth.

But it is going to get suckier as the Trump (President Dumb Fat Fuck) Administration does away with net neutrality.  That means the providers can decide what you can see and what you cannot see, and their decision is based on profit.  Do we really want corporations using the profit motive to decide what we get to do on the internet?  The fact that there are not riots in the street tells you how much we have been seduced by corporations and the profit motive.

She who must never be mentioned here thinks the slow down on the net is a planned strategy to make you want to go buy their service providing guaranteed faster connectivity, but limiting what you can see to the big boys that are willing to grease palms for what comes to you.  Again, why are we not in the streets burning down internet monopoly companies?

Okay some other bones I have to pick.  First is football.  As I watch the games I am becoming more and more appalled by the trash talk, strutting, and in general poor sportsmanship.  But the brutality of the game has gotten out of control.  I feel more like a Roman watching Christians being sacrificed for our entertainment.  Okay, but they choose it right?  And it is a national pastime.  Well here is what stops me and my vow to no longer watch any football:  A tragic death and college football’s reckoning over brain injuries amid a new class-action lawsuit.  How any parent can let their kids play football is beyond me.

And then there is this about the tragic injury/death of two border patrol agents who President DFF and his Republican build the wall cronies used to protect from “bad hombries”:

Once again President Trump showed his willingness to appropriate an American family’s tragedy for his own political gain. Just a few hours after Martinez was declared dead, POTUS took to his preferred platform for addressing the nation.

“Border Patrol Officer killed at Southern Border, another badly hurt. We will seek out and bring to justice those responsible. We will, and must, build the Wall!” he tweeted.

But Trump wasn’t the only one linking the agent’s death to a call for the wall.  Texas senator and one-time Trump punching bag Ted Cruz seized the occasion as well. “This is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat that an unsecure border poses to the safety of our communities and those charged with defending them,” he tweeted.

Even Texas’ sanctuary-city-killing governor, Greg Abbott, got in on the act, citing the occurrence as part of a thinly veiled plea for additional federal security funding.

…Speaking on Monday, President Trump indicated the men had been “badly beaten” and again called for the wall. Meanwhile, a representative of the Southwest branch of the National Border Patrol Agents Council has publicly suggested the officers could have been attacked by assailants hurling stones.

“[Stoning is] the only thing they can think of,” said Council vice president Art Del Cueto. “There is nothing else there on the scene.”

Here’s the problem.  There were no gunshot wounds and they were found at the bottom of an irrigation ditch they may well have fallen into: “The reason the men were found lying at the bottom of a high banked drainage ditch is because they fell into it in the dark”…The injuries to [Martinez], after talking to his doctors, were consistent with a fall,” the sheriff told The Dallas Morning News,  “Very consistent with a fall.”

And now once again you see how people and most dangerously President DFF, sees reality in terms of what he wants to believe and how it is useful to his ideology, not reality.  Now you know how evil he and his minions are and why you should be very worried he has his finger on the nuclear launch button.  Can’t wait to see how he reacts as he sees Finley talking to the Feds and knows the jig is up.

If There Were a God, I Would Think He is Trying to Tell Us Something

Devastating hurricanes in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Houston, and now massively destructive fires in California.  So when’s the big quake? I don’t want to point this out, but the pain and suffering is spread around between both partisan sides of the political spectrum.  The only constant through all of this is the President of the United States, who a minority of the people elected and then shit happened.  Could this be a sign?

Of course all of this could look benign compared to what could happen if the Dotard In Charge (DIC) starts a war on the Korean Peninsula, withdraws from the Iran agreement, hastening their nuclear program, kills Obamacare so millions are once again left without healthcare (oh, they have access, they just can’t afford that access), while his EPA Chief allows the raping of the environment again, all, of course, in the name of reducing regulations and letting the market place work.  There is nature’s fury, and then there is man made damage caused by the DIC put in place by ignorant and ill informed voters, and enabled by power hungry Republicans. If I believed in God, maybe a sacrifice, say the DIC himself, would appease him.

Speaking of God, the other day I was sitting in my truck in the grocery store parking lot waiting for she who must not be mentioned here to get her coffee (we were on our way to the big city to get my Lupron shot for my prostate cancer, maybe another sign), when a nice young lady tapped on my window and asked my about my decal on my truck (a fish sign with legs and the words Darwin written across it).  She said in these troubled times (no shit) she was using her religion to try to comfort people.  She asked directly if I was an atheist, which I said yes, and she asked why.  You try to answer that in 10 words or less.  She asked if something had happened to me to reject God.  I thought about saying I think he has rejected us, but I did not.

I did try to explain to her that being an atheist does not mean, even in these times, that I do not have both spirituality and hope.  Isn’t life a gift enough without a fairy godfather?  But I also explained to her that I respected her faith and would never try to change that.  Atheism is not a religion, and I do not need converts, it is just my personal observation.  I know that faith and religion greatly helps some people and who the hell am I to try to take that away.  The nice thing about this encounter was that she was not trying to proselyze me, but to offer encouragement to someone who she thought may need it.  Her way was through her religious beliefs and some of the wisdoms she found in her Bible.

I bring all this up because when shit happens, people mostly seem to come together and try to help each other whether they are gay, transsexual, immigrant, conservative, liberal, black, white, atheist, Christian, Muslim, well, you get the gist.  God is not a player in that we want to help each other because it is innate in the human condition.  One person who was standing in the dust and ash of what was left of everything they owned, said, you can either stand here and grieve or help others.  What we should learn from these disasters is that either God doesn’t exist, or he doesn’t give a shit.  Either way we are left to our own devices and what I have seen is that those devices in most people are something to be proud of.

In this world we live in, a lot of us define ourselves by our possessions so when we have a devastating loss, well, we are devastated.  And then we seem to be able to rise above it.  And the lesson in a world created right now by the DIC and Republicans is, they have it wrong, we are all in this together and shit happens.  It has nothing to do with how hard we work, or what or who we believe in,  We live in a world where chaos is becoming more prevalent because of man’s selfish actions.  Time to maybe understand we really are our brother’s keeper.  And that my friends, from an atheist.

One other thing as I watch disaster, man-made in action.  A Republican was being interviewed by Andrea Mitchell about what is coming out about the DIC, the meeting where he wanted to know why we weren’t expanding our nuclear stockpile, the shock of those around him, the fucking moron comment by Rex Tillerson, and the tweet storm.  This guy tried to normalize it as well this happens in all administrations and needs to be kept behind closed doors.  No it doesn’t you Little Dotard (LD).  This is not normal.

In the same vein, on CNN they were discussing NBC’s reporting of the above and the DICs tweet this morning:

Some pundit when asked about the DIC’s threat to revoke the license on NBC because he does not like the story, said he was probably joking, to which the host, who had a clue, said president don’t joke about attacking the fundamental value to our democracy of the free press, and the pundit replied, well this is the new normal.  NO IT IS NOT YOU MORON! This is absolutely abnormal and it is how we lose democracy if you start defining it as normal.  We have to understand that our democracy is under attack from the Oval Office and we had better start coming together to fight it because the Republicans are normalizing it.

Random Monday Morning Thoughts

Why does the base stick with Donald Trump. I wonder if it is the abused wife syndrome. Why does and abused wife stay with her abuser? Because she does not see that there are other options.

The New York Times catalogue 61 outright lies that Trump has told while being in office. The Washington Post found 492 occasions where what the President said was either false or misleading in the first 100 days. We are at 836 now with most common lie claiming Obamacare is collapsing. Yeah right, fake news.

The Village Idiot in Chief's new communication director, Anthony Scaramucci, looks like he is from the mob, which may not bode well when the real shit hits the fan, and as near as I can tell, he just more aggressively lies than Sean Spicer did. Oh, and isn't he from that same elite East Coast mob Trump's base hates?

By the way with Spicy gone will we not miss Melissa McCarthy in what I have to say was the best caricature of Spicy and his defensive lying than we will ever see again? Of course Scaramucci could be right up there as Saturday Night Live fodder, and who can do Sarah Huckabee Sanders in her humorless droll assessment that she does not agree when a reporter points out the obvious?

So today Jared Kushner goes before a closed session of the Senate Intelligence Committee and you have to wonder why it is closed. Of course he released his 11-page rebuttal with "no collusion", which is a one-way conversation where we can't hear the other side and the questions which would cast doubt on his story. That may have been by design from the Republican Chairman. Sadly in America today, if you want the truth you have to pray for leaks. What the Village Idiot in Chief calls fake news is the only way we can stay informed.

Chuck Schumer released an op-ed as a preview of the Democrat's "Better Deal" (which I commented on yesterday). But the real fun is reading the comments that noted that in his op-ed he said nothing about single payer, while others noted that Bernie had already charted a path if they had the guts to follow it.

And finally it was noted that the new head of the EPA, Scott Pruitt, had spent most of his time in his home state of Oklahoma. I don't know whether that is a good thing or a bad thing considering his climate denial and fawning over the carbon energy industry. Of course he is putting industry flakes into positions that used to be held by scientists. I wonder if anybody but me remembers Love Canal or thinks our kids not having cancer is way more important than maximizing profits.

When I get the news of the day, which I am ignoring right now, more will follow. It will be interesting to see how the spinners try to pretend what is happening in a Trump White House is rational and that President Trump can learn new tricks. TTFN
